The 15th edition of the Yonex Italian International opened today. Wisnu Hayro Putro, Italy, reached the main draw in the men’s singles by hitting his target after three exciting matches. The Italian athlete beat first Pierrick Cajot, France, then Blai Ramirez, Spain and closed his day with a performance that heated Milan Palabadminton stands playing against Kasper Lehikoinen, Finland.
Also the young Italian athletes performed well: they were called to face a difficult challenge in the qualification rounds of the singles and mixed doubles , considering their young age and the caliber of their, certainly more experienced, opponents. Nevertheless “the azzurrini” have expressed an excellent level of the game and confirmed the technical growth of the entire sector.
Fabio Caponio, sixteen, from Apulia, a Southern region of Italy, turned one of the best: he gave up only in the last qualification round of the men’s singles. The athlete of #ProgettoGiovani #duemila20e24 played and won two very exciting and intense matches against Stamatis Tsigirdakis, Greece, and Matthias Bonny,Switzerland , and surrendered only in front of Soeren Toft Hansen, Denmark.
“I was very excited when I started playing – Caponio said – because debuting in such an important tournament is never easy, but I could master these feelings and played two great matches and also recovered some handicaps. For the last match I was tired and wasn’t able to approach it as I wanted, but certainly this day gave me an incredible experience which will turn useful in the future ”
Emotions will continue also tomorrow with the Italian athletes playing 12 matches .
In the men’s singles the last edition finalist, Italian Indra Bagus Ade Chandra will have to play against Chinese Taipei Chia Hao Lee while Putro, will face Toby Penty, England. In the women’s singles Lisa Iversen is waiting for the difficult challenge against Beatriz Corrales, Spain, seed number one of the tournament
Four pairs will be playing for Italy in the men’s doubles: Lukas Osele and Kevin Strobl against Austrian Dominic Stipsits and Roman Zirnwald, Matteo Bellucci and Fabio Caponio against Danish Mathik Bay-Smidt and Frederic Sogaard Mortensen, Manuel Battista and Andreas Stocker will have to challenge German Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel and Ade Chandra and Putro will meet Spanish Juan Manuel Fernandez Quiles and Javier Sanchez Soler. In the women’s doubles, three Italian pairs will be performing with Silvia Garino and Lisa Iversen already in the eighths of finals; also Giulia Fiorito and Marah Punter and Gloria Pirvanescu and Megumi Sonoda , playing against Lausa Moline and Haidee Ojeda, Spain, and Barbara Bellenberg and Eva Janssens, Germany, will try to reach their teammates in the eighths. In the mixed double, Kevin Stroble and Marah Punter, in the main draw, will have to challenge the pair first seeded Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygensen while Putro, pairing with Laia Oset Moncho, Spain, will play against Petros Tentas and Irini Tenta, Greece.
