Second day characterized by lots of surprises for the Yonex Italian International that are taking place in Milan Palabadminton, where several unexpected eliminations of some of the “bigs” of the prestigious Tournament were recorded In fact in the men’s singles, Indonesian Andre Kurnawian Tedjono, seeding number 7 and winner of last year edition and Estonian Raul Must, seeding number 3, left the main draw: they were beaten by German Kai Schaefer and Danish Kim Bruun respectively; in the women’s singles, it was Bulgarian Petya Nedalcheva, seeding number 4 and 2014 semifinalist, who bore the brunt of the high level of the event: she was defeated by Dutch Soraya De Visch Eijbergen.
In such a highly competitive scenario even Italian Indra Bagus Ade Chandra, victim of an accident in the middle of the second set, had to give up any ambition of victory and surrendered in the eighths to Vladimir Malkov, Russia, seed number four , who required anyway a third set (11-21; 21-15; 21-11) to win over the 2013 edition champion. Ade Chandra himself, because of a strong back ache failed to take the field in the eighths of finals of the men’s doubles with his teammate Wisnu Hayro Putro. The latter was defeated both in the sixteenths by Toby Penty, England, and in the eighths’ mixed double,- where he played with his Spanish teammate Laia Oset Moncho -, by Rodion Kargaev, and Ekaterina Bolotova, Russia.
Also in the eighths, Lisa Iversen and Silvia Garino, the Italian youngest players, were stopped: they were beaten in two sets (21-12; 21-15) by Ana Marija Setina and Kaja Stankovic, Slovenia; in the sixteenths of finals, in the women’s singles, Lisa Iversen lost against Beatriz Corrales, Spain,;in the women’s double, Giulia Fiorito and Marah Punter rose white flag in front of the Spanish duo, Laura Molina and Haidee Ojeda and Gloria Pirvanescu and Megumi Sonoda surrendered to German Barbara Bellenberg and Eva Janssens. In the men’s double, always in the sixteenths, the three pairs Lukas Osele and Kevin Strobl, Matteo Bellucci and Fabio Caponio and Manuel Battista and Andreas Stocker, opposed respectively to Austrain Stipsits/Zirnwald, to Danish Bay Smidt/Mortnensen and German Lamsfuss/Seidel, had to leave the tournament. In the mixed double, Kevin Strobl and Marah Punter went out in the first round: they failed to win over the first seeded players of the Tournament, Nohr/Thygesen, Denmark.
“The participation of the young athletes of the Italian Team turned out to be a very good test - Fabio Morino, manager of the Technical Training Area, said - . It has been nice to play at home, in the Palabadminton, where we train every day. Fabio Caponio, gained important points also in view of the European Under 17, and this is a good news. Also the performances of Matteo Bellucci, and Lukas Osele and Kevins Strobl in the doubles should be underlined. Their level is growing day after day: our boys and girls are improving their capacity of adjusting themselves to the opponent and this is a basic element for their growth. We are aware that they have a long way to go, but we are doing right . ”.
Tomorrow the quarters of finals will begin, they will be followed by the semifinals and Marc Zwbieler, Germany and the Bulgarian Stoeva sisters will certainly be the stars of the men’s single, and the women’s double respectively.
